Aren't those craft skills?
(I might, depending upon if no one else goes that route, take the noble/farm background combo, simply to round out the cast.)
Hawkeye is either a poor rural peasant, who, barring lack of other skills, set off into the woods in order to get sustenance and never really came back, OR a noble halfling with a deep fascination for nature and was born with enough money to be able to spend most of his time outdoors.
Hmmn. I kind of like the latter a bit more. The Noble Ranger has a bit more of a LotR feel.

Halfling are most a nomad trader type people, so often you will find them being 50/50 city boys and farm boys, but most fall under merchant class... the peasants are just those who fail at their job, and the nobles are those who run large well known trains.
Farm boy just means raised outside of the city, you could be a hill folk, woodsman, or fisher and fit it just as well.
as for the skills.... ya those kind of are craft skills good point. So a good one would be guide, or herbalist, maybe hunter or trapper

The Caste thing reflects upbringing, not current status right?
It makes more sense for a noble's child to be able to indulge in falconry and whatnot to me, so I think that's what I'll go with, now that I know what each represents for halflings.
(And it lends itself well to:)

Well, you were born to it, and brought up as it... so you still hold that station... like Aragorn was seen as king by some... even having grown up a ranger in the north. If you are Noble, then halflings and even some humans will see you as such, respect in ways. While nobles may have a 'hate' on for your 'sub-noble' ways.

Oh, that's perfect.
I'm thinking of altering and fixing this build, as the sniper will never, ever get to make full use of his entire range in a game without magic scrying.
Important Note: Considering the number of classes available but limited race selection, are we using the Favoured Class/Multiclassing Penalty Rules? (Because only the artic halflings get Fav Ranger by default)
Going with human simplifies tons of things and doesn't involve trying to justify riding an eagle.
Build is much simpler, concise, and active. Character background remains the same, only change is that the lifestyle may or may not be looked upon more favourably.

As long as we're not doing this between 10am-5pm on a Sunday, I'm definitely in. I think should go either Noble or Merchant City Slicker... Noble makes the in-character connections I'd need to get my sword more likely.

Hmmn. If Leadership is less problematic, what about Wild Cohort? www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a(Hawkeye is looking to have a Mount as an Animal companion and a bird of prey as a Wild Cohort.)
Or I could get a Dire Eagle... Decisions... (Yeah, in the end, I don't have to change my character concept at all. Woo.) And good, we have another likely noble, which means I can avoid worrying about covering that niche.

Going on a quest to gain the companionship of a Dire Eagle is most distinctly within the realm of "Things I would LOVE to do" for Hawkeye. If Wild Cohort isn't too much of a problem, I might go that route instead of futzing around with Beastmaster and Natural Bond to covercome poor Ranger AC scaling, and Pick up Distracting shot or Spiritual Guide. That'll knock me down to just Scout, Ranger, and Wild Plains Outrider (A 3-level prestige class.) I'll get my birdy at level 7. ... Or if I take Wild Cohort and Natural Bond.... Making my Druid level == Char level... I can start with it... and not have to bother my partymates with a quest... And we will be the bestest of friends.. Not being a noble allows me to go back to the "Raised By Eagles" character origin... So yeah.. Starting with a Big Birdy Friend... No other feats but.... So... Worth it...

I note the selection of Ranger alternate features in Complete Champion (Page 50). I think taking all of them, plus Wild Cohort, gets me a very interesting result. The Spirit Guide of mine is the eagle's. I think it's really neat. The character is guided by the ancient spirits of the eagles. How awesome is that? www.dndonlinegames.com/profiler/view.php?id=23039Current Status: Undergoing Rework. Purchasing Equipment. Here's a bit of fun backstory: In addition to the Dragonbone bow, Hawkeye now has dragonhide studded leather, a dragonhide buckler, and a dragonfang kukri. "Waste Nothing."

I love the menacing brute level 2 ability, I shall rename it "asking nicely" Depending on whether we have xp penalties, I am either a rogue 3/ranger1 or wilderness rogue 4 at starting. I just went half-orc to force less optimization, stats won't be anything human couldn't do.
Must figure out the AC for shooting out a lantern, I saw a dwarf rogue npc that liked to do this once.

There is a surprisingly large amount of usefulness to be derived from completely mundane substances.
There is even MORE utility that can be derived from the fantastical saddlebags.
(I cannot fit the full loadout of saddlebag gear + personal equipment on my character sheet.)
((Marbles. Bags and bags of Marbles! Muahaha!))
What is the general availability of alchemical things? Sunrods and Tindertwigs and Alchemist's Fire and their ilk?

multi classing will work like normal.... though that still means that it does not kick in until you take a third class or a level in a class that is a higher level than another class you have.
....
if that makes sense.
Natural Bond caps at you HD, so would not stack with the feat. The feat it does not stack with druid/ranger level.
Special materials need approval.
Champion of the Wild (must have as any ranger), the other two however i am less sure about.

Darn. I read somewhere that Natural Bond worked with Wild Cohort. Shame. (I am obligated to ask, of course, if there is a chance of a houserule. Sans feat, I can recruit a druid companion at my HD minus 3. Nat bond is +3. If not, I'll have to wait for Zephyr.)
"but treat yourself as a druid three levels lower than your character level. For example, once you reach 7th level, you can choose an animal cohort off the list of animal companions available to a 4th-level druid."
Material Requests: Dragonbone - Approved Dragonhide - PHB/SRD Dragonfang - Draconomicon 117 Sharkskin Leather Armor - Stormwrack 106

The bow was approved, but it was noted that even SRD stuff needed be passed by me.
As for the nat bond, nope. As A. i do not like the idea of it stacking, and B. i said no starting with the bird anyway.
As for the other bits..... i will look at them.
