I for one will support a movement to allows PCs to design their own races, so long as a picture of the race in question is given, and a background, and so long as it is okay'd by Brent or Nygil. As a matter of fact, I feel only Brent and Nygil should be able to okay these things, as I don't trust myself to not allow pretty much anything, despite my willingness to petition for pretty much anything.

Yaa..... the thing is if you make a custom race it does not fit the setting as you are the ONLY ONE OF YOUR KIND, plus the system for making a races is REAaaaalllllyyyyy aimed towards the DM doing it, not the PC.

I like how I've had my avatar for all of one day and it is broken. Oh well.
I would like to see the custom races used awesomely, but responsibly. Mayhaps we give DM privilege for creating races which they are willing to use, ie. there are two requirements to creating your own race as a PC.
1) It must be okay with either Nygil or Brent. 2) You must have a DM on board who is willing to use that race in their portion of the campaign world.

This also means that if you have a race which is okay'd by a certain DM, then it only exists/lives in his location for the campaign, and thus would be treated as suitably alien when in any other area of the campaign world. This means that if we are really on board for a race to be used in the game, and multiple DMs okay it, it becomes a more common sight in the world, but if only one DM okays it, than NPCs in the world will react with more caution towards that race because if it isn't alien, it is at least foreign to the nation/land you are currently in.

IMHO, doing this will make the game feel a whole lot less creative. You need restrictions in order for really creative things to shine through.
If you open up custom races, you're going to see a club game like Star Wars Episode I-III.

Plus the cheese!
My race gets +8 to int, but that's okay because it gets minuses to strength, dex, wisdom, and charisma. Ya I'm playing a wizard, why do you ask?
And no, I have not read the book and therefore have no idea if what i just said is applicable in anyway. BUT IT MIGHT BE!!!

That is incredibly applicable. Oh well. I could see using this race designer as an option only for races which already exist in the DnD world. Ie. I could design a lava child within the race designer and use that rather than the lava child PC which seems like it could be rather broken. I see some of the problems with this, I just think its a really cool system.

Also: honestly, DM and Brent/Nygil would have to okay it, so if it wasn't fluffy, then we should just say no.
"Just say no to power-gaming."

Though I have absolutely no say, I'd personally veto custom races, especially if the setting has already been established.

I want to use custom races personally because I have a few ideas that are well suited to being designed as such. Also allowing players to make their own races seems like a terrible idea. Mayyyyyybe let players petition DMs to make races for them if you want to allow it at all.

So we all agree, no players making races. DM's may make races (not to PC as). And, if a player wants to use a DM custom race to play as... due it being a part of the world already we may think about it.
The book itself has many races in it already as well, and those are good. They are the races we know and love from 3.5 and such, I see them being fine, along with the options for the core races the book gives.

So DMs can't make races they want to play as makes sense: if I don't get to play as it I'll just NPC it. PCs can petition for races. And thus, no races will be broken. I second Nygil's rules.

Also: I will be taking petitions for any races specifically having to do with the spirit world, speaking with the dead, and zombies.

Glad to see my proposal seems to have met with a positive reaction. We should bring it up at the DM meeting and decide then but for now it seems reasonable to work under this assumption no?
