This is for all you new and aspiring Warhammer 40K players. I've been playing tournament Warhammer for a few years now, and I've learned some tricks and tips I'd be happy to share.
I run Tyranids: I have about 3000Pts and counting. And while I realize that most players in these parts don't have as much flexibility as I do building their army, I'd be glad to help write a list for any of the newer players out there, or any older players looking to be more competitive.
Tell me what you have access to, and I'll try my best to help you crush your friends. (Of course, if I don't know your army that well, you might be SoL)

I'm kind of interested in starting a Tyranid army (currently lack the money to do so). I've never played warhammer and have no pieces, so I'm starting brand new.
Any help would be appreciated ^^

The fourth edition starter set, Battle for Macragge, includes some tyranids and some space marines. If anyone here plays space marines or is interested in starting, split the cost with them. I've seen it on the internet for anywhere between $8 and $50. I think there's 10 Termagaunts, 8 Genestealers, and some spore mines, along with a squad or two of marines. There's also some dice (extraneous), and a pocket sized rulebook (considerate, but now outdated), as well as some terrain pieces.
Most basic tyranid units have brains roughly the size of walnuts, and thus rely on bigger, "Synapse" creatures to serve as conduits for the hive mind. In game terms, that means that they've gotta be standing within 12" of a synapse creature or they don't follow your orders. Genestealers don't have to worry about this, but gaunts do. So, you should invest in some Warriors or a Hive Tyrant next, then a couple more boxes of gaunts.
I'm a big fan of tyranids, partially because they're some of the most customizable armies available, and partially because I've always had a soft spot for biological von-Neumann machines. Here's a unit summary. Please remember that I don't have a codex with me, and this is all of the top of my head.
Hive Tyrant: A BUG (Big Ugly Guy) who will probably be leading your army. They're tough, can carry big ol' weapons, and learn powerful psychic abilities. You can also give them wings. Warriors: The best of the best. Capable of acting as HQ units if you lack a tyrant. All sorts of different options, and (I think) the only unit that can form heterogenous squads. Good for both RIPPING AND TEARING up close, and belching venom from a great distance.
Broodlord: If Genestealers are the Alien, then the Broodlord is the Alien Queen. See below. Genestealers: Have you ever seen Alien? Pretty much that. Fast moving melee specialists. Gaunts: Your most basic infantry, can organize in broods of up to 32. You can toss all sorts of fancy add-ons onto them. However, barring special circumstances, the cheaper they are, the more you can field, and the more you can field, the better. Usually, their name contains a prefix- spinegaunts are armed with a weapon called a "spinefist", scythegaunts have "scything talons", and so on. You want about 45 bajillion of these. Gargoyles: A special type of gaunt that can fly, and that doesn't require as much babysitting. Raveners: I frakking love these guys. Bursting out of the ground right at the enemy's undefended rear, firing a hail of fleshburrowing devourer grubs from an orifice in their chest (six shots each), then charging 9" into melee and making up to six attacks each. (3+2 for scythes+1 for charging). There's not a lot of infantry that will survive that. Lictor: A scary tentacled thing with all sorts of stealth rules. I don't have much experience with them, but I've heard they're good at sneaking up on tanks and smashing their weak, delicious rear armor.
Carnifex: A tank with claws and teeth. They're fun, they're huge, they're hard to kill (it's possible to make them completely immune to anything weaker than a bolter), and you've got a lot of choices for weapons. Spore Mines: They're mines. Something gets too close, they go boom. Not too complicated. Biovore: Huge beasties that ejaculate spore mines at you. Basically, they're your artillery- not that good up close, but can cause all sorts of havoc at long ranges. I've never had much luck with them- you'd be better off putting a Barbed Strangler gun on a carnifex.
Am I missing anything? Tyrant Guard, I guess. Just tough, blind bodyguards for your Tyrant. But they've got GIANT CHITINOUS SHILEDS that should POISONOUS SPIKES, and that's always cool.

So the battle of macragge box-set is a great place to start (especially if you have a friend to split it with) beyond that, you need to know what you want to do with your bugs- if you want to be ultra competitive, then you want to ditch gaunts- if you want to be semi-competitive, then you can still run gaunts. However! All of this has changed, and I am now totally out of date and out of the 'know' as apparently, we have or are getting a new codex with some new goodies.
They are giving us things bigger than carnifexes.
Additionally, it is rumored that the Broodlord is not nearly as amazing as it once was, which saddens me a little.
I don't know, give me a chance to check out the new codex and I can give you a heads up of whats what. (Though investing in a hive tyrant is probably where I would start- A tyrant and Genestealers are going to be the back-bone of your army almost no matter what.)

I think it should be stated that the new Nid codex is out now. So all you Nid players might want to splurge a bit if you haven't done so already

I've had a look, it's scary! The power to spawn more units, With Out Numbers.... the nids are really getting good at the endless waves of tiny kill bugs.

I play a DE army but also have models for necrons and chaos (my bros used to play.) Almost 1000 points and if I am allowed proxies then I could make a much bigger army.
