Hello good peoples of the forum, I was wondering if I could get a little bit of help in character creation. Not in the whole, stats, character sheet, sort of character creation, but how to craft my character.
Last year I played a Dread Necromancer, one of my most favourite classes, but this year we switched to Pathfinder. I don't really have many books on Pathfinder (I have some, thanks Colin!) and I don't know the material at all. From what I have been reading, everything from Clerics, Sorcerers, Wizards, Witches, and Oracles can be turned into Necromancer-like characters, seeing as how there is no actual 'Necromancer' class.
Can anyone give me a little bit of help as to what I should do? I can't decide. What would make the best kind of necromancer charcter for Pathfinder?
Sincerely, Guy Fleegman

What was your favourite part of Dread Necromancer from 3.5? Flavour, Rebuke, the damage reduction, or just everything put together? The "best" way to recreate the DN is to be a wizard and use every trick and resource you have to replicate these effects (which can be done, for the most part). Personally though, I would go Sorcerer with the Undead Bloodline. I would have dead, cold eyes and just walk around being a general creepy dude. www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/sorcerer/bloodlines/bloodlines-from-paizo/undead-bloodline

Witches are pretty decent at necromancy too. But first you should probably answer Steve's question about what part of the class you liked best so we can help you better.

Don't forget summoner... Although they're only good at summoning 1 really competent undead, or hordes and hordes of bad (not powerful) undead.

Yeah, I actually wanted to kind of stay away from the Summoner, its too... I don't know, it just doesn't seem like Necromancer to me.
The problem with this character is that I kind of don't know what I want. I like minions, but people seem to hate them (coughnygilcough).
So I guess I want a character with survivability, that can take a punch, but can deal out some magical damage back, and rely on a number of somewhat powerful, but disposable, minions.
I kinda guess what you said Steve, I really just like the Dread Necromancer itself and how it was put together. The ability to control negative energy, be a master of the undead, take stunning hits and still keep going, and wield some really wicked spells.
The problem with a lot of these classes is the fact that they don't really become Necromancer-like until higher levels, and I heard we are only going to level 10.

those details are yet to be sure. it will be in the same world, and it will be a higher level. How much of a in game time span is between them is unclear, and many other details are still being figured out.... but as the 'undead' you maybe able to be the same dude, or if nothing else the same build at a higher level.

For reversing positive/negative energy on yourself, go Dhampir. For a bulky caster, I suggest Magus, as they get to cast in Medium Armor at lvl 7, but that's just a first glance without looking too deep (though they are partly melee so take it as you may). Also, look into the "Other Paizo" prestige classes, there is a ton of stuff in there that is sorta specific to certain things.

But what class should I go as first? Oracle? Witch? Cleric? Wizard? Other? Which is better suited?

Never played a witch before but they look fun. Personally i believe one can never go wrong with a wizard. They are just hilarious when they want to be.

Second, witch looks like a lot of fun, but wizard is the standard, the norm for a necromancer in like all 6 versions of DnD.

Wizards specialized in necromancy are decent at necromancy. So are Clerics, especially those with the Death domain and the Undead Lord Archetype. So are Oracles especially those with the Bones Mystery. So are Witches. So are sorcerers- the Undead bloodline doesn't synergize all that well with hordes of undead, but the abilities it gives you are pretty cool on their own. For races, Dhampirs have the whole "healed by negative energy" thing, plus a few other abilities that synergize well with necromancy. You can't go wrong with Elves as wizards (or witches), dwarves as clerics (or oracles), and drow or halflings as sorcerers. You basically can't go wrong with humans at all. Do you prefer the idea of attacking stuff with bolts of cold and clouds of darkness, or of bossing around hordes of undead minions? Wizards are better at the blasting, and clerics are better at the minions, but they're all at least decent at it. If you're looking for something a little less conventional, both summoners and alchemists have some support for zombie minions, but only get up to 6th level spells.
